Rhi^2 Road Trip, Setpember 2008: Medieval Times

Medieval Times, the Greatest Place on Earth

The trip was winding down and it was time to go back to State College. We decided that we should break up the 7-hour drive by going to visit Jackee in New Jersey. Not one to actually want to go to New Jersey, I knew that this was my chance to go to Medieval Times. I’d heard about it and I’d seen the Flavor of Love episode where Flavor Flav went there, and I knew I needed to go.

We got there pretty early, so we got our seating assignments and headed to the lobby area. It was fantastic! First you got your picture taken with the king and princess. Then when you enter the lobby, there is a giant bar with tons of Medieval Times souvenir glasses and mugs, knick knacks galore, blinking things, crowns! The place was all done up, “Medieval” style and you could sit in thrones or mingle with characters like an executioner (who was not very friendly, mind you) and the MC guy (what would you call him?). We made friends, which was great, although they weren’t sitting in our section. I wanted to check out the torture museum, but didn’t want to shell out the extra $.

When we finally got to go in, I couldn’t contain my excitement. We were in the second or third row and cheering for the Red Knight. The arena was intense, with all of the lights and music and excitement. I bounced up and down in my seat like a child, I was so excited.

It was seriously better than I could ever imagine, and I have high expectations. I ate tasty chicken and potatoes with my hands. The tomato soup and garlic bread were delish, too. Rhiannon had the vegetarian meal, which was something like hummus and pita chips. She got the oh so Medieval plastic utensils. The food was good! But oh, it’s not just about the food…it’s about the fucking incredible show you also get with your meal.

There was jousting and lancing and a guy with a falcon and dancing horses! All the knights would do their individual competitions and we would go nuts in the audience. “GO RED KNIGHT!!!!!!!!!” Was screamed so many times, I was going hoarse. Every time they won a contest, they would throw flowers to their adoring fans. I jumped up and down, screaming my head off, and our knightliest of knights threw a flower to me. OH. MY. GOD. I COULD NOT HANDLE THE EXCITEMENT.

And then there was the main show. The white prince was kidnapped and it was up to the knights to fight each other in order to bring him home to the princess. I believe our guy lost first, but it didn’t matter. It was the best night of my life! Afterward, I snagged a program that had been abandoned by a group of kids having a birthday party. The knights came out to the lobby for pictures, and we got our picture with the Red Knight. And he signed the program! Dreamy! Not only that, Rhiannon struck up conversation with the MC guy, and he took us back to the stables to see the horses. So great!!! Medieval Times was hands down my favorite thing we did on this road trip.

So, there it is. The road trip has come and gone. We had an amazing time and did awesome things. Maybe next time we’ll road trip it around the West Coast?

The End
