Back from the dead!

Having some technical difficulties, but I’m kinda up and running (although let’s be real, not really). This will probably take me 5 years to fix!

The Power of Words

By in Uncategorized

Right now the east coast is getting pounded by up to a foot of snow, after receiving up to 3 feet of snow just a few days earlier. Ask anyone right now if they believe in global warming, they will probably tell you no. But there is something going on here. The winters are getting colder, the summer is getting hotter, the storms are getting more severe. The climate is changing. Ask anyone if they believe in climate change, you might get a few more yeses. Ahh, the power of words.

Is there anyone out there who honestly believes that pumping this much pollution into the air (and ground and water) is not having any affect on us at all? I’m not a scientist, but I am pretty sure that humans have had some sort of affect on the climate over the past century. How could we not? Sure, we might have been heading towards another ice age anyway, but all the shit we are putting into the environment can only be speeding things up. I honestly think people would be more receptive to these thoughts if we called it “climate change” instead of “global warming.”

This brings me to another similar issue: gay marriage. When you hear the word “marriage” you might think man & woman, church, god…etc. It has a lot of religious connotations. But “civil union” has more of a legal feel to it. Rights. Equality. The religious connotations are removed. I know I am not looking for a marriage with “god.” I am looking for a legal binding union so that I can adopt (if I wanted), receive health benefits, or make important end of life decisions with my partner. I just want to do it with a man instead of a woman. There will always be the homo haters, but wouldn’t people be more receptive to these thoughts, as long as it was called it a civil union? I may be wrong, but isn’t a civil union the same thing as marriage (without all that religious nonsense)? But the second you throw the word “marriage” into the mix, the religious wackos and conservatives go apeshit.

I took a great class in college once where we talked about politicians and the media and the words they use. How they can easily manipulate emotions by using certain words and phrases. Scary stuff. Swine flu, anyone? Excuse me, H1N1 (far less scary sounding). So let’s all watch what we say.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

By in Uncategorized

Oh hey, it’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Yesterday I read in the student newspaper that it was proposed at the State College Borough council meeting to rename a prominent street after Martin Luther King, Jr. Wait, what? I seriously thought it was a joke (you’d only really get it if you live here). This immediately made me think of the Chris Rock joke: “If a friend calls you on the telephone and says they’re lost on Martin Luther King Boulevard and they want to know what they should do, the best response is ‘Run.'” It would be pretty damn funny to have a Martin Luther King Boulevard, usually associated with the bad part of town, in State College, PA, the safest big town/little city in America. But seriously, this really makes no sense, yet no one is going to say anything out of fear of being labeled “racist” or not wanting to promote diversity. I have to wonder if it’s like where I work, when someone comes in with an off the wall idea and you tell them “sure, sure, that’s a great idea, we’ll do that!” then immediately forget about it as soon as they leave.

As I was paying bills yesterday, and noticing that I had spent $102 on postage, I wondered to myself about stamps. What if I bought a ridiculous amount of forever stamps before the price went up and then sold them down the road below face value, but for more than what I had paid for them. What kind of profit could I make? I have random thoughts like this all the time, and as quickly as it popped in my head, it popped back out. Later that day, a woman came by to do some research. While she was there, her cellphone rang, and I couldn’t help hearing her conversation since she was sitting right behind me. Someone wanted to sell her husband stamps below face value. She was trying to figure out if they were stolen or if that was even legal; I was trying to figure out what were the odds of this happening the same day I was randomly thinking about it. I wont lie, it kind of freaked me out.

Appropriate conversations to have in public

By in Uncategorized

Tonight out at dinner my dad talked about the blacks and their collard greens and women volleyball players and their asses. I’ll give you 2 guesses as to the people who were sitting behind us during both of these conversations. Surprisingly, he didn’t say anything about fat people, even though there was a rotund man sitting across from us.

Tonight I also admitted to myself that just maybe I DO like Miley Cyrus’ Party in the U.S.A.

On My To Do List…

By in Uncategorized

“Make a list of things we need to do.”

You know, sometimes I need to high five, but there’s no one around, so I high five myself. But then it’s really just like a clap. BUT, if something warrants a high five, might it not also warrant a round of applause?

Orange Glo

My skin is dry. It is itchy. Streaky. And I have Michael Jackson syndrome. I sunless tanned the hell out of myself the past few weeks for this last play, and it’s not pretty at this stage in the game. It did look pretty ok after the first few days, but now I am blotchy and I just feel like paint that has been painted over again and again. I could never do this full time, as it is a huge pain in the ass. I would spray myself sticky and then rub in lotion once that (finally, FINALLY) dried. I pretty much disregarded the exfoliating and moisturizing, which is evident in this “detox” period. I think I’d rather do it the old fashioned, cancer happy way…although I’m sure in a few years we’ll find that the sunless shit also causes cancer. Oh, and I’m pretty sure I am naturally about the same color as that shoulder off to the left.
